Diana Nooten

Diana Nooten is an artist who was born in 1964, in Oosterhout, a city in The Netherlands. Even as a kid, she already knew she wanted to be an artist when she grew up. In her parents’ living room, they had a big painting by Cornelis Kuijpers (1864-1932), which portrayed a beautiful sail ship.
The dynamics and colour of that painting might have been what led to her painting ships later on in her life. Other great influences were the proximity of the Biesbosch (a big national park) and holidays to Zeeland, where you can find many wonderful ships and nautical scenes. As a kid she experimented with mixing colours using her dad’s cans of paint in their shed, which laid the foundations of her love for the use of colour.
In 1983 she started her studies at the Art Academy Sint Joost in Breda. She graduated Cum Laude in 1988 and in her first years as a professional artist she worked for famous companies such as Holland Casino, Levi Strauss, Penthouse, Amnesty International, and many others. So in her early career she worked mostly as a freelancer , but later on she focussed on making works of her own choice.
Diana chooses to work on big scale. Using big canvas challenges her and provides her with the opportunity to work with all the power and speed that is so characteristic for her work.
She is especially fascinated by painting sail ships. She is constantly challenged by the sails, the colours, the way the light hits them, and the elements of wind, water and air.
